Heavy-duty metal grating from IKG® is designed for applications that require maximum support of heavy or bulky loads, especially in cases of vehicular traffic. It is available in two different cross bar configurations, which are hand-welded in place using conventional shielded gas methods.
Heavy duty metal grating is designed to service heavy loads such as roads, highways, forklift traffic, industrial plants, and loading docks. This includes heavy vehicular traffic up to H-20 loading. Calculations for vehicular loading are based on AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges. Since applications can vary greatly, heavy duty grating is manufactured in a wide range of bar sizes and spacings.
Other common applications include airfields, ramps, industrial flooring, driveways, highway bridge decking, concrete reinforcements, vault covers, trenches, offshore drilling rigs and paper mills.
Industries such as transportation, construction, and petrochemical have a need for specialized heavy duty metal grating that requires a much higher safe live load. Products
Bearing bars are required to be pre-punched to receive either a round (Type HW) or rectangular (Type EC) cross bar.
Type HW: Welded construction with round cross bars welded at each joint. All heavy duty grating is welded. We do not recommend the use of any other type of grating when the application includes heavy rolling loads.
Type EC: Welded construction with rectangular cross bar welded at each joint.
Heavy Duty V.S. Regular Duty Grating
Heavy duty grating requires a bearing bar thickness of at least ¼” inches. Anything less is not considered heavy duty according to NAAMM standards. For your specific load requirements contact our heavy-duty grating specialists.
Finishes/Metal Types
IKG heavy duty metal grating is manufactured in carbon steel and stainless steel and is available in a mill, galvanized, or painted finish.
Surface Types
You have the option of either a smooth surface or serrated surface for heavy duty grating. Serrated grating adds another level of anti-slip protection and is to be considered for environments that are in contact with liquids.
HW
The rectangular cross bar configuration offers increased lateral stability and is recommended where highly concentrated or turning wheel loads are present. Durable, with a high strength to weight ratio, our economical Custom Welded Grating is suitable for drainage trenches and inlets, as well as other applications.
HWB
The HWB product is a custom Welded Heavy Duty Grating with bearing bars 1-3/16″ on centers and Round Cross Bars 4″ on centers.
HWF
The HWF product is a custom Welded Heavy Duty Grating with bearing bars 1-3/16″ on centers and Round Cross Bars 2″ on centers.
HWD
The HWD product is a custom Welded Heavy Duty Grating with bearing bars 15/16″ on centers and Round Cross Bars 4″ on centers.
HWDF

EC
IKG® Custom Welded Heavy Duty Rectangular Cross Bars are available only in steel alloys. The rectangular cross bar configuration offers increased lateral stability and is recommended where highly concentrated or turning wheel loads are present. We offer them with heavier bar sizes of ¼”, 5/16” and 3/8” (contact our sales team for more information on heavier thickness.) This durable, economical low-maintenance grating offers high strength to weight ratio suitable for trenches and inlets.
